Performance improvement presentations, invited speaker talks on event horizon

Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center.

Friday, Nov. 2

CMO's office to host health care improvement event

UMMC chief medical officer Dr. Michael Henderson's office is sponsoring an event, "Sharing Improvements in Health Care," which will include presentations by multidisciplinary speakers from across the Medical Center who will highlight institutional performance improvement efforts, from 9:30 a.m.-noon on Friday, Nov. 2, in room CW 106 of the Classroom Wing.

The event, which will include oral and poster presentations, will promote collaboration and partnerships to improve quality outcomes, enhance patient safety and improve patient experience.

Psychiatry research fellow to relate drug abuse, sleep

Dr. Lais F. Berro, postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, will give the Psychiatry Grand Rounds presentation, "The Crack of Dawn: Understanding the Relationship between Drug Abuse and Sleep,” at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, in room CW 308 of the Classroom Wing.

Florida biology expert to outline peptides' epithelium roles

Dr. Gill Diamond, professor of oral biology at the University of Florida, Gainesville, will give the Microbiology and Immunology Seminar, "Antimicrobial Peptides in the Mucosal Epithelium: Roles in Host Defense and Therapeutics," at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5, in room 4A.

Biology postdoc fellow to review androgen excess in women

Dr. Edgar D, Torres Fernandez, postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, will give the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology presentation, "Androgen Excess in Women - Cardiometabolic Implications," at 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5, in classroom 3A.

Augusta faculty to keep health from being lost in translation

Dr. Michael Stefanek, professor of psychological sciences in the College of Science and Mathematics at Augusta University, will give the UMMC Cancer Institute presentation, “Decision Making Science, Health Disparities and Health: Lost in Translation?” from 11 a.m.-noon on Wednesday, Nov. 7, in classroom 6A.

Physiology grad assistant to set renovascular disease strategy

Erika Guise, a graduate assistant in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, will give the Department of Physiology and Biophysics presentation, "A Novel Therapeutic Strategy for Renovascular Disease," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Colorado atherosclerosis expert to sound off on lipoprotein lipase

Dr. Robert H. Eckel, Charles A. Boettcher Endowed Chair in Atherosclerosis; professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes; and interim vice chancellor for research at the Anschutz Medical Center, University of Colorado, Denver, at Aurora, will give the Grand Rounds presentation, “Lipoprotein Lipase: An Evolving Story on How Tissue Specific Regulation of the Enzyme Relates to Metabolism and Beyond,” at noon on Thursday, Nov. 8 in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

The presentation is sponsored by the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research and the Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases Research Center.

Dr. Jan van Riggelen, assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Augusta University, will give the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology seminar, "MYC's Broad Reach as Oncogene Includes the Control of the DNA Methylation Machinery," at noon on Thursday, Nov. 8, in classroom 4A.

USM nutrition expert to discuss demographic obesity disparities

Dr. Jennifer Lemacks, associate professor of kinesiology and nutrition at the University of Southern Mississippi, will give the Population Health Grand Rounds presentation, "Knowledge Versus Wisdom: Misalignment of Practice to Evidence in Obesity Management to Address Demographic  Obesity Disparities in the Deep South," from noon-1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, in the fourth floor conference room of the Guyton Research Center.

Texas trademark experts to examine research patents

Experts from the Texas Regional Office of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will provide an overview of the function and uses of various types of patent applications during a presentation, "Intro to Patent Examination: What Researchers Need to Know," at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 14, in room 4A of the Research Wing.
